Genoa is called the ‘Gate of the Mediterranean’ with very good reason. The city lies in the hills and overlooks a stunning bay which opens out into the Mediterranean Sea with easy access to the western coast of Northern Italy and the French Riviera.

This historic city has a beautiful old port from where the Etruscan merchants established themselves in the 6th century BC. It continues as a port of trade even today, with much of the  area having been renovated, now acting as a leisure and cultural centre, where the Genoese and tourists stroll along the waterfront.

You can sample the bars and restaurants serving traditional Genoese food, wander into the labyrinth of medieval alleys and small sun touched squares with their ancient churches, or visit the many museums and art galleries.

Sailing from Genoa

During a week’s charter you can sail from Genoa, down the Ligurian coastline to Portovenere and back.

On the way visit Santa Margharita which is a pretty and lively town. Portofino, a few miles further on, is a small fishing village crowded round a small harbour and is considered to be among the most beautiful Mediterranean  ports. It has long been the haunt of film stars and jet setters.

The sailing from Sestri Levante to Portovenere is along a particularly beautiful coastline, with only a couple of small harbours along the way.

Portovenere has a sheltered harbour and is a charming town, with very tall houses along the quay. The houses, up to six or eight stories high, were built in the Middle Ages as defence towers directly above the harbour.

If you wish to sail for two weeks, you could encompass north Corsica (87 miles direct) and the island of Elba.
Alternatively you can also sail along the French Riviera.

This area offers relatively easy sailing with deep waters and good conditions. Long weekend charters are also possible out of high season as the weather remains mild throughout the year.
