Charter a yacht from the base of Etrusca Marina, Scarlino, in Tuscany, from where you are spoilt for choice for areas in which to cruise.
The Italian mainland and Tuscan Archipelago comprises an area of 600 sq km between Livorno and the Argentario promontory that makes up Europe’s largest marine park. There are seven islands – Elba, Gorgona, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri. You can enjoy the beauty of these islands all year round, with each offering something different.
The largest island is Elba which lies only 10km from the mainland, is a beautiful island with many attractive harbours and anchorages. Porto Azzurro is the best marina in Elba with pontoons for 40’ yachts, but there are several other marinas on the island offering good anchorages. Elba offers a mild climate and a multitude of diverse scenery and landscapes from romantic fishing villages, ancient castles to green valleys and enchanting bays combined with sandy beaches. Climb to the top of Mount Capanne to enjoy a superb view of Elba, the island of Capraia and on a clear day the whole Tuscan archipelago and the Italian mainland.
Capraia is an island to the north-west of Elba. Its large marina has good facilities, plenty of small pizzarias and fresh fish restaurants. Spend the day pottering around the bustling port or take a short bus ride to a neighbouring town whilst taking in the beautiful scenery.
Giglio is a gem and full of surprises during any season, with close contact with unspoiled nature. A crystal clear sea, which is of an emerald green shade and teeming with underwater life, surrounds the island, of which 90% percentage is still wild. It is also almost totally mountainous, with a maximum peak of 1500 feet. From the top, particularly during clear weather, a spectacular panorama can be seen.
The Argentario peninsula on the mainland, offers excellent facilities for both sailing and diving. The irregular coastline creates a diverse marine environment and is backed by a succession of high cliffs that suddenly open in to small inlets and sandy beaches. The harbour at Porto Ercole is very well equipped with excellent facilities and very popular during spring and summer thanks to the large number of berths available. Restaurants and shops along the waterfront guarantee a sophisticated and lively social life.
For a week’s charter you can cruise the islands, for two weeks you could include the North coast of Corsica and the Argentario peninsula. Sailing here is relatively easy and is a stress-free area with many harbours and anchorages, good winds and deep waters.
