THE LITTLE BRITAIN CHALLENGE CUP 2008

THE LITTLE BRITAIN CHALLENGE CUP

This year’s Regatta will again be a series of two short races on the Friday and one long race on the Saturday, run by the Royal Yacht Squadron on courses set in the central Solent area from the Squadron starting line.

The Little Britain Regatta is open to all crews who are primarily involved in the Construction Industry. It is biased towards the less experienced crews who wish to take part in a major event and be part of a fun-filled long weekend that involves training, racing and partying!

As on previous years MEC Sail are offering their fleet of yachts for this prestigious event. Qualified skippers can be provided if required. The yachts can be prepared, and crew kit provided in company colours if required. Please contact us for further details and prices.

THE EVENT

The event which brings together like-minded companies form the construction industry is held each year and is based in Cowes. It has become one of the year's most prominent events and is associated with great competition and apres-sail activities.
The idea of the Little Britain Challenge Cup started with Architect Peter Thompson of Norman + Dawbarn Ltd., and Steve Green of Cladtech, on a tour of the United States researching cladding companies for the Little Britain Office Development on London Wall in 1988.

They discovered over drinks in their hotel bar, a mutual indifference for golf days and both being keen yachtsmen, decided to have a day’s yacht racing instead. Steve Green volunteered a trophy, and a wager was struck that the loser would buy dinner after the race. Phil Davies of Foremans, Services Engineers for the project joined them and over dinner afterwards, it was decided to run the race again the next year, inviting other friends from the Construction Industry and to raise money for charity.

LBCC continues to attract more and more new companies to join the regulars that have been taking part in the event since 1988. All available berthing in Cowes Yacht Haven, Shepards Wharf Marina and Venture Quays in East Cowes is taken to accommodate the boats, and there's an action-packed social programme to complement the racing.
